Will baby boomers accept being seniors?

Some people are suggesting that baby boomers shutter at being called a “senior.”  It’s as if this were some kind of curse or, at the very least, a disease.  Well, next year the boomers start turning 65 and will continue to do so every year until 2030.  If the aging me generation doesn’t grow up, there will be no one to show up and perform the important role of bringing life experience to the generations who follow.

No one doubts the contributions made to our society and the sound wisdom of the greatest generation.  But their leadership and influence is waning as these folks are leaving us in growing numbers each day.  The baton has been passed on to the pre-boomers, those born between 1930 and 1945.

Pre-boomers had the good fortunate of being born during the Great Depression or WWII, although no one consider this a blessing at the time.  Having a foundation built during difficult times and seeing how our parents sacrificed and worked to help this nation endure instilled us with a sense of values, traditions and beliefs that stood the test of time.

By the end of 2010, all pre-boomers will be 65 or older.  Most of our generation does not have hang-ups about being 65, being dubbed a senior or being retired.  We enjoyed our youth having been part of the roots of rock and roll, got married and raised kids as well as made contributions to our families and society through the career opportunities we pursued.  Now, we stand ready to give back to the country that gave so much to us and help trailing generations enjoy the American dream too.

It seems morally reprehensible and intellectually unfathomable to ascribe to the notion that this country has seen its best days.  Those who believe this have never felt the power of the American spirit at work.  But, we who are committed to making this the country the land of opportunity for our children and grandchildren must do whatever it takes to maintain the integrity, perspicacity and diligence needed to get the nation back on track and headed in the right direction.

The pre-boomers will do our part, but it’s a big job.  We need the early boomers, those approaching that magic age of 65, to join in the effort.  These “New Seniors” are the lifeblood of the aging population of America.  Without you, our country will slide back rather than move forward.  If you respect our heritage, are proud of our traditions and value our freedoms, it’s time to share this with younger generations.

And the only way to make this a reality is to accept the fact that you have reached the age of reason which only comes with maturity.  As a New Senior, you have the best of both worlds: being old enough to have a wealth of knowledge and being young enough to apply it.  Remember, no matter what you call yourself, if you’re over 65, you’re definitely a senior.  That’s what others will call you, at least behind your back.  So, get out ahead of them by declaring yourself a “New Senior,” and give back what was so freely given to you.
